Irwin Kaufman
Diagnosis: Base of Tongue Cancer
Irwin Kaufman was traveling with his wife to Birmingham when he experienced a terrible sore throat. That was not uncommon, since he frequently had sore throats. In fact, prior to the trip, he had consulted a head and neck specialist for the problem. But the doctor never considered Kaufman to be at risk of developing cancer, so he did not perform a complete oral cancer examination.
When the sore throat persisted, Kaufman saw another specialist who examined him more thoroughly. The diagnosis: base of tongue cancer.
Base of tongue cancer is relatively uncommon, and its often hard to detect early. Symptoms, such as difficult or painful swallowing or a sensation of a mass in the neck, can easily be overlooked.
Fortunately in Kaufmans case, early detection ensured that he got the medical care he needed. After a second opinion confirmed the diagnosis, he underwent successful surgery to remove the cancer in Birmingham. Upon his return to Memphis, he consulted with UT Medical Group head and neck cancer specialist Dr. Sandeep Samant, who performed a biopsy, followed by radiation and follow-up examinations.
Since his surgery 10 years ago, Kaufman has been able to resume his busy life. He says he is thankful that he detected the cancer early and that his recovery has been so successful.
