Laryngeal cancer

Cancer of the larynx (voice box) affects approximately 12,000 people each year in the United States.  Smoking is the leading cause of this disease.

You can read a clear and concise description of this disease at the National Cancer Institute’s website by clicking here.

Our division has made significant efforts over the years to study the effects of various treatment choices on the final outcome.  The success of treatment can be measured not only by way of survival from cancer but also with the long-term consequences on the functioning of the voice box as well as the appearance.

A variety of treatment choices are available for treating laryngeal cancer.  These include radiation therapy, laser-assisted removal of the cancerous portion of the voice box through the mouth, open operations that conserve the unaffected portions of the larynx, removal of the entire larynx, or combinations of chemotherapy and radiation for laryngeal preservation.  Ask your physician about the treatment options most suitable for your type of cancer.

We believe strongly in active patient participation at all stages of care.  A comprehensive assessment in the form of appropriate and directed investigations, evaluation by physicians from various disciplines, and an interdisciplinary discussion of treatment plan in a tumor board meeting will typically occur before you are offered the treatment options suitable to your case.

If you have a specific query about your cancer or the plan of care, please write to us info@headneckmd.com.
