My GI Tract

If your appetite is down, drink fruit juices instead of sodas. Be careful if you are having radiation or recently completed radiation, the acid in the fruit can cause burning.

Take nausea medications approximately 30 minutes before putting anything in your mouth. (This includes brushing your teeth).

Prevention of nausea is the key. If you took reflux medication before you were diagnosed with cancer, you should continue on that medication during treatment. Most brands now have solu-tabs, which can be put down feeding tubes or dissolve quickly in the mouth. If you take pain medications or are unable to eat enough fiber, you are at risk for constipation. You should be on a stool softner everyday and drink at least eight cups of water or more per day. (Remember that apple juice and prune juice has a laxative effect).
